However, I remember when I was too scared to play for ANYONE!
You see, I was not what you would call a natural when it came to playing the guitar.
I remember when every time that I would start to move around the neck, my brain would just freeze and I would get a feeling of overwhelm, not knowing where I could, or should place my fingers.
Now, this was very frustrating and a bit scary for me because music was all I ever wanted to do... and this made me wonder if I just really wasn’t cut out for guitar or a career in music.
Well, that feeling led to a determination to learn all the notes of the fretboard.
However, when I looked at one of those charts with all the notes written out...I just felt even more frustrated and completely overwhelmed.
And then, something quite embarrassing happened...
I was at a jam session where another guitar player who was younger, less experienced and not as technically advanced as I was, joined us...
And when we started jamming, he sounded WAY better than I did.
Song after Song!
He just seemed to know what to play and where and when to play it.
Needless to say, the embarrassment and frustration just continued to grow.
Fortunately for me, so did my determination!
After some reflection on how I could remedy this, I realized that I was somewhat familiar with one area of the neck. And when I was there, I saw that my performance was much better and felt way easier.
I started to really study that section of the neck and I began to see patterns. I then saw that those patterns repeated throughout the neck and I thought...

So, I came up with some very simple shortcuts to tie everything together and visually organize it in my mind.
Shortcuts that I could easily understand, memorize and that would work with how the brain decodes, stores and retrieves information, instead of against it.
BTW, did I mention that I love to learn about how the brain functions? Studying how it organizes information, memorizes and executes movements is somewhat of a passion of mine? I find it fascinating!
